DISABILITY, MEDICINE AND MUSEUMS

7pm - 9pm
Hunterian Museum, The Royal College of Surgeons of England,
35-43 Lincoln's Inn Fields, London, WC2A 3PE

Ju Gosling, artist; Jocelyn Dodd and Professor Richard Sandell, University of Leicester; Professor Gus McGrouther, plastic and reconstructive surgeon; Dr Ruth Richardson, medical historian.

Disabled people, where represented in museums, are often defined by a medical condition or physical impairment. Nowhere more so than in medical museums, where the human specimen is shown as an example of a disease, injury or illness. Little consideration is given to the person who was once connected to a broken limb or a 'tuberculous spine'. Join us for an evening discussion where an expert panel will examine how the ‘social model’ of disability can re-interpret and re-present the human behind the medical condition.

UK DISABILITY HISTORY MONTH 2011 LAUNCHES TODAY! HOORAY!

5:30pm - 7:30pm
Mander Hall, Hamilton House
1 Mabledon Place, London, WC1
Although there have been a number of exciting UKDHM related event running before this date - this is our official launch date to kick start the month.

For some time now a number of disabled led organizations have felt the need to have a specific time in the year when the history of our struggle for equality and human rights can be focused on.

It will run from 22nd November to 22nd December 2011. This covers HIV/AIDS Day (1st December), International Day of People with Disabilities (3rd Dec.) and International Human Rights Day (8th December). It also follows on directly from Anti-Bullying Week (15th to 19th November) which is important as 2.5 times as much bullying is recorded towards disabled as compared to non-disabled young people( 70-80% of young disabled people claim to have been bullied in school and college). We split across the two months to allow for the Christmas shut down and to allow for four weeks in school term time.

DUAL SCREEN INSTALLATION OF 'RESISTANCE' at BEDFORD UNIVERSITY
Exhibition continues from 22 Novemeber - 22 December 2011

6pm
HUB at our Bedford Campus,
Polhill Avenue, MK41 9EA

To mark Disability History Month, the University of Bedfordshire is hosting a dual-screen installation ‘Resistance: which way the future?’ by Liz Crow of Roaring Girl Productions.

The installation explores a neglected period of history and raises critical questions for today. Its starting point is the Nazi programme of mass-murder targeting disabled people and, crucially, disabled people’s resistance to it. But what does this history mean for all of us now, disabled or not?

How do we learn from it to shape a better future?

"THE IRISH GIANT"

1pm
Hunterian Museum, The Royal College of Surgeons of England,
35-43 Lincoln's Inn Fields, London, WC2A 3PE

Professor Márta Korbonits, Barts and the London School of Medicine

While his skeleton standing at nearly eight feet is unique among the museum collections, Charles Byrne had two cousins who were a similar height, suggesting his condition might have a genetic link. This discovery started a historical and scientific journey which led to identification of Byrne’s genetic abnormality and to the history of this unusual gene from ancient times until today. The study’s author Márta Korbonits discusses her work and will be joined by Brendan Holland who shares an ancestor with Charles Byrne and will provide his own perspective on this discovery.

TELLING OUR STORIES AND RESISTANCE: DISABILITY ARTS AT M SHED FOR UK DISABILITY HISTORY MONTH

  10.45am - 5pm

M Shed  Princes Wharf, Bristol BS1 4RN   mshed.org

Come and watch disabled theatre makers explore The Tempest, enjoy poetry written in British Sign Language, find out how performers with learning difficulties amused Henry VIII and much, much more. What do we know about disabled people's history and what can we learn from it? Come and meet the artists and find out what it's all about.

In a unique collaboration to support UK Disability History Month, Bristol based deaf and disabled artists, writers, film and theatre makers are hosting a day of activities to explore disabled people's often forgotten history and to celebrate disability arts and culture. Telling Our Stories will take place alongside Liz Crow's international award winning exhibition Resistance: which way the future? Showing at M Shed 5th January to 5th February 2012.

Resistance: which way the future? Takes as its starting point the Nazi programme of mass murder which targeted disabled people and became the blueprint for the larger holocaust. What turned doctors and nurses into killers? What stopped ordinary people from speaking out? And what does this history mean for all of us today?

Drop in or come for the day! Everyone welcome, bring your friends!
British Sign Language interpreters will be present throughout

What can we all learn from history and which way the future?

“This is an episode of history that is virtually hidden, yet the values that underpinned it still echo through disabled people’s lives today. We can’t change history, but we can learn how to influence the future. The events of the holocaust came to an end because ordinary people resisted. I want audiences to feel inspired to get involved, be effective and find the courage to be a part of change.” Resistance Director Liz Crow
