ABNORMAL: TOWARDS A SCIENTIFIC MODEL OF DISABILITY BY JU GOSLING AKA ju90

This colourful and often playful national touring exhibition results from an artist’s residency at the National Institute of Medical Research. Using digital imagery and installation, Ju Gosling explores the cultural construction of disability via society’s (mis)interpretation of science and medicine. The tour climaxes at the Hunterian Museum, and includes an installation made especially for the museum. In the Memory Jar Collection, Ju responds to John Hunter’s collection of human and animal body parts, together with the use of photography within the study of anatomy.
A pre-recorded audio-description of the exhibition is available for blind and partially sighted visitors. See the accompanying website www.scientificmodelofdisability.co.uk
The exhibition will be accompanied by two associated events: an artist’s talkand panel discussion.
A limited edition hardback of Ju’s book Abnormal: How Britain became body dysphoric and the key to a cure (Bettany Press, 2011) will be available in the museum shop.

UK DISABILITY HISTORY MONTH PRE-LAUNCH EVENT:

We are holding a pre-launch event to promote our second UK Disability History Month. The event will involve an evening of commentary and presentations from renowned disabled authors, poets and activists - from 5:00 - 6:30 pm. This will be followed by a Reception from 6:30-7:30.
We have invited the following guests to make a short 10-12 minute presentation each on the night:
1 – Penny Beschizza - on being deaf in the UK in the past and now2 – Michelle Daley - The Black disabled experience in the UK3 – Micheline Mason - Poet and Activist, Launching her anthology “Sorry I Don’t Have the Time”4 – Katherine Quarmby – Author of “Scapegoat : Why are we failing Disabled People”5 – Dr Sonali Shah – who will be talking about her research and writing on living as a disabled person in the UK in the 1940s, 1960s and 1980s.

Story at 40 is an oral history project capturing the lives and times of disabled people in Wales from the 1970s to current day. It has provided an opportunity for disabled people to record their own memories and experiences to inform present and future generations.
We will be joined by Jane Hutt AM Minister for Finance and Leader of the House (with responsibility for Equalities) and Carys Howell from the Heritage Lottery fund.

“Working with Disability” Disability History Month Exhibition & Reminiscence Events

Eastside Community Heritage and DABD (uk) are inviting East Londoners to share their memories of living and working with a disability at a reminiscence session in Dagenham. Reminiscence sessions are a great opportunity to see photographs of local people and industries from the Eastside archives, and to have an enjoyable chat about your own experiences with like-minded people.
A “working with disability” exhibition will run alongside, telling stories of disabled workers from East London’s Remploy & Newco factories, in their own words.
The exhibition is on 4 pop-up boards, and is available free for local libraries, community groups and voluntary organisations to host during Disability History Month (which runs from Nov 22nd - Dec 22nd) and beyond.

Join us for this free event to mark the 3rd UK Disability History Month. Drop in or stay all day. There will be stalls, talks and discussions, entertainment and activities.
Talks include ‘Tackling disability hate crime. What are the police and Lambeth council doing? What can we do?’ And ‘Our vision for UKDHM 2013’.
Also’ Not For The Faint Hearted’. Poetry open mic with Sean McGovern. Bring your own poetry.

Disability History Month- Inspired

Laurence Clark is an internationally-acclaimed comedian, presenter, writer and actor who has cerebral palsy. His observational, political stand-up and hidden camera footage demonstrate the endearing naivety and ridiculousness of human behaviour by seeing the world through his
eyes with humour and warmth. He’s performed everywhere from the House of Commons to a double-decker bus in Sheffield. His 7 critically acclaimed solo shows at the Edinburgh Fringe have gained him 25 4-star and 3 5-star reviews. With television appearances on BBC, ITV and Channel 4, Laurence was the subject of a major
BBC1 documentary called “We Won’t Drop the Baby” shown in March 2012. He was awarded Shortlist magazine’s Funniest New Comedian, and writes for The Independent and The Guardian.

Temple Grandin is a biopic film directed by Mick Jackson and starring Claire Danes as Temple Grandin, an autistic woman who has become one of the top scientists in the humane livestock handling industry. Dr Temple Grandin did not speak until age four and had difficulty through school, interacting with people. She is noted for creating her 'hug box', widely recognized today as a way of relieving stress in autistic children, and her humane design for the treatment of cattle in processing plants, which have been the subject of several books and won an award from PETA. Today, she is a professor at Colorado State University and well-known speaker on autism and animal handling.

Confronting Inequality – What’s Sport got to do with it?

The Rosa Parks Symposium will explore sports, equality and inclusion. It will mark UK Disability History Month as well as the end of the Olympic and Para Olympic year. The day will be full of information and interactive. It will give people ideas about how to achieve positive outcomes for individuals, organisations and our communities.
Bring your own stories of what it was like to be a disabled person in Bradford in the past. There will a team of people from Bradford Talking Media (btm) who want to record your stories either on the day or set up a time with you to visit their new studios and record it there.
