Born on the Fourth of July - Ron Kovic

Antiwar activist and Vietnam veteran Ron Kovic has turned his personal tragedy into a blessing by helping other people. As a young ma, Kovic thought that fighting a a war was a heroic, glamorous job.

Kovic was paralyzed from the waist-down after he was shot in the shoulder. Physically wounded and mentally unstable, Kovic thought he would return home to a hero's welcome. Instead, he was spat on by Americans, and placed in a miserable Veteran's Hospital.

Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and Optional Protocol

The Convention follows decades of work by the United Nations to change attitudes and approaches to persons with disabilities. It takes to a new height the movement from viewing persons with disabilities as "objects"  of charity, medical treatment and social protection towards viewing persons with disabilities as "subjects" with rights, who are capable of claiming those rights and making decisions for their lives based on their free and informed consent as well as being active members of society.

DARE - Nabil Shaban

DARE, Disabled Anarchist Revolutionary Enclave, a fictional group of disabled terrorists
opposed to the new eugenics movement, through genetic engineering, genetic therapy, abortion of all disabled babies...in other words, Genetic Cleansing.

DARE was originally created for the theatre in 1997, from an idea by Nabil Shaban, who was already a disabled activist with DAN, the Direct Action Network, who were protesting at the lack of accessible public transport for disabled people. Their protests and acts of civil disobedience worked. Britain now has wheelchair accessible buses, trains and taxis.

Defying Stereotypes: The Way forward

Stereotypes are groups of attitudes which have little or no basis in reality and yet persist in cultures. Stereotyping reduces the individuality and character of people to false social constructs. This leads to name-calling and violence towards the subjects of stereotyping, undercutting the humanity of the victims.

There are ten main stereotypes of disabled people:

Disability News and Information Service

See their website at http://www.dnis.org/

Information is a powerful tool. It can lead to self-advocacy and empowerment, if used intelligently. This is what we firmly believe in at Disability News and Information Service (DNIS) - a fortnightly news service on the Indian disability sector.
