DPAC - 26 March 2011

"Today we want to make our voices heard and speak out along with others who wish to protest against the unjust measures being taken by the CONDEM Government. Today we want to ensure the 26th of March 2011 goes down in history as the first time since the 1920s that disabled people en bloc have joined a mainstream demonstration called by the Trade Union Congress.

To make sure disabled people on this March and those supporting us through virtual protests and other activities aren’t forgotten or left as footnotes in history, DPAC is launching a new project: Disabled People Make History in collaboration with Disability History Month and Spaghetti Gazetti.

In the Picture

Scope’s In the Picture campaign raises awareness of the need to include disabled children in the books they read. It has 10 guiding principles that are based on the social model of disability.

We’ve produced:

  • a list of early years picture books that feature disabled characters
  • an image bank to inspire authors and illustrators, including examples of good practice, photos for reference and children’s drawings
  • resources including FAQs and lesson plans for teachers
  • an exhibition of colourful works from leading artists, all featuring images of disabled children
  • links to useful websites

Inclusion Literature

Research suggests that providing children with inclusive reading material is important because it reflects the increasing social diversity of their classrooms, promotes positive attitudes towards peers of all abilities and, in the case of disabled children, supports the development of a positive self-image.

Inclusion Now - ALLFIE

Inclusion Now is a quarterly magazine published by ALLFIE - 'The Alliance for Inclusive Education' in collaboration with CSIE and Parents for Inclusion.

ALLFIE believes that education should support the development of physical, vocational and academic abilities through mixed-ability tuition in mainstream schools so that all students have the opportunity to build relationships with one another.  We believe that a fully inclusive education system will benefit everyone.

Check out their website for more info: http://www.allfie.org.uk/
