Down Under Mystery Tour

Down Under Mystery Tour is a unique comedy film starring and co-written by three men with intellectual disabilities.

The film was conceived as part of director/producer Michael Noonan’s PhD about disability and comedy, which sought to explore the complex line between ‘laughing at’ and ‘with’ and demonstrate that meaningful and constructive creative collaboration between intellectually-disabled and non-disabled people is possible.

We are experienced, disabled performers/actors with a consistent track record and history of making plays and performances together for over twenty years. We used to be called the Portway Players but we changed our name to Firebird Theatre when we became an independent Company in 2005.

We want to share as much as possible with people about who we are, how we work and what theatre means to us.

In the Picture

Scope’s In the Picture campaign raises awareness of the need to include disabled children in the books they read. It has 10 guiding principles that are based on the social model of disability.

We’ve produced:

  • a list of early years picture books that feature disabled characters
  • an image bank to inspire authors and illustrators, including examples of good practice, photos for reference and children’s drawings
  • resources including FAQs and lesson plans for teachers
  • an exhibition of colourful works from leading artists, all featuring images of disabled children
  • links to useful websites
