Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and Optional Protocol

The Convention follows decades of work by the United Nations to change attitudes and approaches to persons with disabilities. It takes to a new height the movement from viewing persons with disabilities as "objects"  of charity, medical treatment and social protection towards viewing persons with disabilities as "subjects" with rights, who are capable of claiming those rights and making decisions for their lives based on their free and informed consent as well as being active members of society.

Crippen

Crippen is otherwise known as Dave Lupton, who goes under other alter-egos such as Sox from time to time.
Somewhat slowed down by having to use a wheelchair for a while, Dave found himself surrounded by ideas for cartooning based upon Disability and Disability issues. It wasn't long before the alter ego "Crippen" emerged and the rest, as they say, is history.

Dame Evelyn Glennie

"Dame Evelyn Elizabeth Ann Glennie, DBE (born 19 July 1965)

is a Scottish virtuoso percussionist. She was the first full-time solo percussionist in 20th-century western society.

Glennie has been profoundly deaf since age 12. This does not inhibit her ability to perform at the international level. She regularly plays barefoot during both live performances and studio recordings in order to "feel" the music better."

DARE - Nabil Shaban

DARE, Disabled Anarchist Revolutionary Enclave, a fictional group of disabled terrorists
opposed to the new eugenics movement, through genetic engineering, genetic therapy, abortion of all disabled babies...in other words, Genetic Cleansing.

DARE was originally created for the theatre in 1997, from an idea by Nabil Shaban, who was already a disabled activist with DAN, the Direct Action Network, who were protesting at the lack of accessible public transport for disabled people. Their protests and acts of civil disobedience worked. Britain now has wheelchair accessible buses, trains and taxis.

Dartford Hospital Histories

This website is devoted to the history of Dartford’s hospitals. I have always been interested in history and my interest in the hospitals came as I was working in the library at Joyce Green; the hospital was due to close and there was a huge amass of archive material collected by Dr John Burne. As I sorted through the collection I made notes, took a few photocopies and eventually had enough material to write my first book ‘A History of the Darenth Hospitals’ which covered the smallpox camps, the Southern, Darenth Park and the Mabledon (this book is out of print now but may be available as a download later). I then wrote ‘Joyce Green and the River Hospitals’, covering the hospital ships, Long Reach, the Orchard and Joyce Green. My latest book ‘Stone House: the City of London Asylum’ was written after the Trust contacted me and asked me to write their history.
